Leo XIV Receives Gänswein Amid Speculation Over Paris Nunciature

Today, Pope Leo XIV received Archbishop Georg Gänswein, 70, in an audience, amid renewed speculation that Benedict XVI’s longtime secretary could soon be appointed Apostolic Nuncio to France.

It was Gänswein’s third meeting with Leo XIV: the first came during the Pope’s gathering with apostolic nuncios in June 2025, followed by a private audience on December 12, 2025.

Monsignor Gänswein serves as Apostolic Nuncio to Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. Pope Francis appointed him to the diplomatic post in June 2024, ending roughly a year in Freiburg without an official assignment following the death of Benedict XVI.

In recent months, Vatican observers have speculated that Gänswein could be transferred to the Apostolic Nunciature in Paris. Asked about the possibility at a public appearance in Ravensburg in July, Gänswein declined to confirm the speculation.
