Did Bishop Sheen write a letter that is circulating around the internet?
Pope Leo XIV just appointed a German bishop who supported same-sex blessings, gender ideology, and LGBT initiatives. The same Vatican that celebrated that appointment has now imposed canonical sanctions on the Society of Saint Pius X, sanctions that require a more demanding process for lifting than the procedure for Catholics who have procured an abortion. Another piece of the puzzle is that +Sheen - like MANY priests at the time (even my saintly confessor) - saw Vatican II as "of the Holy Spirit" and submitted to it in obedience. They explained the fallout after the 2nd Vatican Council as a "high jacking" of the "reform" by radical progressives. Hindsight has revealed that the impetus of the council itself was flawed: that the Church needed to change to speak to "the modern world."
This is not meant to be uncharitable, but Fulton Sheen should not be a yardstick to measure orthodoxy. Whatever zeal he had initially, he was full bore a lover of VCII, Paul VI and the new mass. I am sure with that pedigree he was not a friend of Abp. Lefebvre or the Society
The important point was that the SSPX was not in schism at the time the letter was written. Bishop Sheen was in the hospital. Had multiply operations. And died soon after. A decade before they were accused of schism. He had a lot of people working for him. It's said thousands of people to help respond to all the letters Bishop Sheen received. And it's well known he didn't like the SSPX. That has nothing to do with the letter though. It was not his style at all. He wasn't one of my favorites anyhow. And your comment is not uncharitable but sadly true.
Personally, I don't think Bishop Sheen wrote the letter. It doesn't sound like Bishop Sheen at all. This is someone's opinion. And it seems like they had something against the SSPX. Maybe someone who was part of the novus ordo mess or preferred it to the Latin Mass. But I don't believe Bishop Sheen had anything to do with writing it.
