When Mario Cuomo, the pro-abortion Catholic, was the governor of New York in the early 1990s, then-auxiliary Bishop Austin Vaughan of the Archdiocese of New York (who ordained me to the Priesthood) warned that he risked the fires of hell for his policies. Not surprisingly, a common sense affirmation of faith caused a storm in the media—but the good Bishop did not back down nor did he issue an apology for doing what bishops are supposed to do: preach the truth in love. Newsflash: counseling someone that they risk damnation when they are in danger of spiritual shipwreck, is a most loving act.

I'd only heard of Bishop Vaughan through very faithful, fervent priests. Which is why you have never heard of him in the general media.
