This happened today in the Diocese of Lafayette, Louisiana. What you see here is a woman (lying prostrate) being consecrated as a virgin, living in the world. She will not be a nun. She will simply live among us as celibate. She has given up marriage, sex and children for Jesus Christ. Believe it or not, this is becoming more common these days. The intense perversity of our modern world, contrasted to the intense purity of Jesus Christ, is drawing more men and women to a life of celibacy.

Why don't women like this found new Orders of Beguines? They were consecrated virgins also, but were not nuns. The did not pronounce solemn vows. The pronounded simple (simplex) vows of only chastity and obedience. They did not profess poverty. Many Beguinages were enclosed, but the "sisters"...and they were called "Sister", operated businesses within the Beguinage, and the community made money and shared the profits.
Beguines were allowed to bring some of their own personal possessions into the Beguinage, such as their bedroom furniture, cabinets of dishes, vases, plants, paintings, books, etc. They each had little houses, usually 3-4 rooms each. The larger Beguinages instead had dorms, where each Beguine just had a large bedroom.
It would be a good idea for these people to group togther and re-found the Beguines. They could wear the traditional Beguine habit (long black dress, white wimple and white veil. The could operate a book store, collectible store, tea/coffee store, etc. outside the enclosure, and people would be welcome to their chapel.
Re-founding the Beguines would be a good idea. Otherwise, this way of just being consecrated a virgin and living by herself with no distinguishing habit/garb is honorable, but rather selfish. Why would someone just do it for themselves? Instead, spread the movement, gather together like minded women, and live in community like the Beguines did. Otherwise, just livingly singly....no one would even know the person is living that way. They would just asume they were an unmarried woman, or a widow, or in this day and age unfortunatly be mistakes as a lesbian because she's not married, etc.
