COVID Vaccine Maker Sued Over Deaths

Pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca is facing a number of legal claims in the United Kingdom over deaths or debilitating injuries attributed to an adverse reaction to its COVID-19 vaccine.
The roughly 80 claimants are part of a litigation group that says they are not anti-vaccination, but are seeking compensation from the company beyond the £120,000 ($152,000) allocated through a government damage payment scheme.
The cases being brought related to instances of Vaccine-induced Immune Thrombotic Thrombocytopenia (VITT), a rare condition that can cause life-threatening blood clots that block the flow to vital organs.
A spokesperson for AstraZeneca told Newsweek that it does not comment on ongoing legal proceedings, but that patient safety was its "highest priority" and that "our sympathy goes out to anyone who has lost loved ones or reported health problems."

Largest Covid Vaccine Study Yet Finds Links to Health Conditions

(Bloomberg) -- Vaccines that protect against severe illness, death and lingering long Covid symptoms from a coronavirus infection were linked to small increases in neurological, blood, and heart-related conditions in the largest global vaccine safety study to date.
The rare events — identified early in the pandemic — included a higher risk of heart-related inflammation from mRNA shots made by Pfizer Inc., BioNTech SE, and Moderna Inc., and an increased risk of a type of blood clot in the brain after immunization with viral-vector vaccines such as the one developed by the University of Oxford and made by AstraZeneca Plc.
The viral-vector jabs were also tied to an increased risk of Guillain-Barre syndrome, a neurological disorder in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nervous system.

Germany's defense minister has warned that "there could be a threat of war in Europe" as he defended his administration's response to emerging threats, including Russian and Iranian aggression.
Speaking to German broadcaster ZDF on Sunday, Boris Pistorius, a member of Chancellor Olaf Scholz's Social Democratic Party, said nations like Germany would have to increase their armed forces capability to maintain peace in the region, and needed to change their mentality to one in which war was possible.
"Thirty years of peace dividends, 30 years without the Warsaw Pact as a threat have meant that the Bundeswehr, like other armed forces, is not in the condition it would otherwise have been," he said in German, according to a translation produced by Newsweek.

Tensions between the West and China show no sign of easing. Interdependence and mistrust continue to mix uneasily. Triggers are many and varied including; human rights, relations with Russia vis-à-vis Ukraine, microchip manufacturing and the big one, Taiwan.
Then there is the rhetoric. US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen is in Beijing for talks aimed at easing some of these tensions. It’s ironic, but not unprecedented, that at the exact same time, President Xi is telling the troops of the Eastern Theatre Command – the one that faces Taiwan – that they need to step up their combat readiness and “… persist in thinking and handling military issues from a political perspective, dare to fight, be good at fighting, and resolutely defend our national sovereignty, security, and development interests.”
