In any case, he emerged from the room of tears, dressed not as a Pope but as a cardinal, and had to announce to the other cardinals his decision to renounce his office, which must also have been done gently and with apparent legality, since the conclave continued. Slowly but surely, we are learning about this tragedy. Because the cardinals are sworn to secrecy, maybe we will not know exactly why and how the events transpired, until we depart from this life.
