It was Gänswein’s third meeting with Leo XIV: the first came during the Pope’s gathering with apostolic nuncios in June 2025, followed by a private audience on December 12, 2025. Monsignor Gänswein serves as Apostolic Nuncio to Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. Pope Francis appointed him to the diplomatic post in June 2024, ending roughly a year in Freiburg without an official assignment following the death of Benedict XVI. In recent months, Vatican observers have speculated that Gänswein could be transferred to the Apostolic Nunciature in Paris. He underlined that lay Catholics who attend an FSSPX Mass because of their attachment to the old rite are “by no means schismatics.” But he simultaneously distances himself from a more strongly pro-FSSPX position: “If another opportunity of assisting at the old rite is already available in the same geographical area, it becomes harder to justify attending an SSPX chapel.” He points to the FSSPX’s “manifest canonical irregularity.”

If questioned, of course, Kwasniewski would disagree with a significant amount of the current Conciliar practices being winked at or promoted by the Conciliar popes, bishops and priests.
